Oddly Difficult? Yes

~~~My U2 Top Ten~~~
  • Beautiful Day [All That You can't Leave Behind]
  • I never really think of this as my favorite song by them since it's so ridiculously overplayed, but it is. It always gives me this incredible emotional reaction every time I hear it, and I love it. It can also pick me up when I'm having the worst day. That's what the lyrics are about, isn't it? Life might seem pretty shitty, but there is always something good to see?
    Plus, uh, I still have an attachment to the video and the airplanes and the stupidity. But that's not why I listed it - it's just worth mentioning.
  • Exit [The Joshua Tree]
  • I almost put this at number seven, but then I realized just how much I loved it and quickly bumped it up. "40" will have to suck it up and be a big boy.
    Exit. . . Exit . . . Where do I begin? When I first bought The Joshua Tree back in 2005, I hated it. I always restarted the CD by the time "One Tree Hill" ended, because I hated both this and "Mothers of the Disappeared." Maybe I wasn't mature enough to look past the more conventional light rock songs? Gosh, I don't know. It wasn't until a year or two ago that I really started to love it, and for reasons I previously hated it. It's not a normal rock song by any means. The music starts out calm and then builds up to this pretty intense climax (in comparison to the rest, anyway) before falling back and ending extremely calm and quiet. It's more like a story than a rock song, with the traditional rising action, climax, resolution, and falling action plot. Then the "lyrics" aren't really lyrics at all. They're not lyrical. They're more like a free verse poem. A free verse poem thrown into a wordless short story. That's how I see Exit.
    As I was writing this, I wrote it with Exit in slot 3. After raving about it, I have to move it up to slot 2. I just forgot how much I love it.  In fact, I better leave now before I think about things for too long and move it up to number one. In fact, just consider these two a tie.
  • Ultraviolet (Light My Way) [Achtung Baby!]
  • I don't know why, but I absolutely love this song. It used to make me think of one of my exes for some reason I can't even put my finger on, but I'm very over said ex by now and still love it, so who knows.
  • Running to Stand Still [The Joshua Tree]
  • I also came super close to putting "Bad" on here, since apparently I like songs about heroin addiction. I think this can transfer well into any sort of sorrow or dark place, once you ignore "suffer the needle chill" and stuff. Like, "eyes painted red" could easily be blood-shot eyes from crying and not from drugs, etc. And I love the simple, quiet, and slow music. It all works beautifully.
    This got me through some tough times when I was really depressed in the spring of 2009.
  • With or Without You [The Joshua Tree]
  • It's a very pretty song and all, but I mainly love it because it was the first U2 song I liked, and it is responsible for my little fandom in general. This is thanks to local radio, Yahoo music, and the fact Friends plays it in two episodes. Haha.
  • City of Blinding Lights [How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb]
  • Like Ultraviolet, I can't explain why I love this song so much, but I do and I always have. It was love at first listen. A big part of me really likes opening songs in the 2000s tours ("Elevation" and "Breathe" barely missed the cut - sorry, guys!), so maybe that's it? It's inevitable?
  • "40" [War]
  • It's a freaking psalm. To music. With some extra stuff. And it's gorgeous. Tell me you don't like this song and I'll tell you you're not a true U2 fan. Uh. . . just. . . kidding?
  • Stay (Far Away, So Close!) [Zooropa]
  • See "Ultraviolet" and "City of Blinding Lights." Though this one doesn't have light in the title, so that's a change!
    . . . Except for the first lyric, SHUT UP!!!
    In another unrelated video note, I love the video for this song. It's so lovely! I want freaking U2 guardian angels, okay!?
  • Walk On [All That You Can't Leave Behind]
  • Ultraviolet, COBL, Stay. . .
  • Two Hearts Beat as One [War]
  • So apparently, I can only express my love for half of this list in words. I'm sure that's enough to bore you all anyway, haha!
