Sergeant Michael J. (Owshaney) Lawrence, Minneapolis Police Department

Sgt. Lawrence was a good man.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Sgt. Lawrence was killed in the line of duty on December 30, 1925, while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect. Officers later shot and killed the suspect who killed Sgt. Lawrence.

He served with the MPD for 26 years. 26 years as a police officer! What's more, he became a cop at the age of thirty... (I'm 29). Sometimes, I feel old, like I should have figured things out earlier in life. But then I find people who became cops later in life, and I realize how great they are, and I feel much better.

I will remember Sgt. Lawrence with love for this, if for nothing else: he was killed two days from retirement. Mandatory retirement. Two days from the end of his career, he was still catching bad guys. I wish I knew what he felt when he decided to go after the shithead who killed him, but whatever it was, I love him for it.
