tit for tat?

A week ago we had the announcement that Ford would be closing it's Geelong engine assembly plant. Part of the closure announcement was that Ford would begin importing American engines, a move now viable as import tariffs had been removed when the US-Australian Free Trade Agreement went through. Unions decried the loss of jobs and impact on families that would follow. The Australian car industry called for more freebie grants from the government to support it against competing imported cars.

Today we have the announcement that the US Congress has voted to not only maintain, but to increase funding for US farm subsidies. This move effects Australia as we are an importer of agricultural products into the US.

What gives?
