Ok, now that I'm finally over my con exhaustion and have some free time, I should do my mini report for Tekko.
I must say that even though Tekko had the potential to be really crappy this year due to the Expomart situation, they passed with flying colors. I'm quite glad my predictions came through, the people really are what make this con so much fun to go to. The only issues I had with it were a little crowding on Saturday (which I was expecting,) a slightly confusing layout, the masquerade seemed a bit short (again totally understandable,) and the pizza/deli place didn't stay open late enough. Other than those minor things, it was a blast!
Highlights:
Game shows- It's no doubt that it'd be hard to please the crowds after Greggo's put on such amazing shows, but honestly this year's lineup consisting of OMGYOUGOTTASEETHIS, Live action Whack a Catgirl, and Anime Hangover, was just as entertaining if not more so. (Of course, since I participated in 2 of them, my opinion is slightly biased.) I'd definitely like to see all 3 games come back next year, if Mr. Gogal remains in command of the games. He did an excellent job hosting and getting the crowd warmed up.
Panels- I think I went to more panels this year then ever before at a con. Such a nice variety, and all the ones I attended had very competent panelists heading them. I laughed till I cried, did some improv, danced, sang, had the crap scared out of me...what more could you ask for?
AMV contest- This year's was really amazing. I had the pleasure of going Thursday night, so I got to view it with a looser crowd. We were laughing and making little comments throughout the entire contest, even while viewing the videos seriously. Two videos in particular were sooo hilarious that I have to pimp them for viewing pleasure; Let them eat Rei and Serenade. Both videos featured Evangelion, and I won't give anything away so you'll have to look them up at youtube of amv.org to find out what the deal is. Trust me, you'll love them. ^__^
Karaoke- No matter how good or bad the karaoke may be, I'll be there to hear all of it. Thankfully, it was all good to fantastic. The Pokemon theme and Sailor Moon came up quite a few times, as well as some tunes I never expected to see bout were done very well, like The Worst Pies in London. Everyone seemed to be there for good fun, laughs, and music, so it all went over very well.
Game room- I'll admit I only came in to rest and play DDR every once in a while, but the selection of games was great and there was plenty of Bawls to go around. There also didn't seem to be as much funk in there this year. Bravo to people bathing, and getting good air flow in there.
Masquerade- Despite being a bit short, it was quality over quantity as most of the skits were adorable and hilarious. It was a very nice touch to have Cid emcee this year, and the banter between him and Gold Saucer guy #11 was lots of fun. Having the last items from the charity auction being bid on at halftime again was also nice, sadly I only had $4 on me at the time. But I ended up giving my 4 bucks to another group to help meet the $120 bid they needed to get a very rare autographed Hellsing item, so I didn't feel too bad. Ms. Savage is soooo sweet that I just couldn't help but do it again, just like I did with my $25 last year. Hope whoever got that Azumanga Daioh item last year is enjoying it. ^___^
Staff- Only one staffer seemed to be a bit cranky this time around, and I can understand that because it was about space issues and keeping people in line. Having that many people waiting for long periods of time in a small space, will cause some problems, but things went quite smoothly given the circumstances. Besides that, the staff and minions couldn't have been nicer and more on task. I have to give major props to the tech crews escpecially since they saved quite a few panels from biting the dust. It's a behind the scenes job, but there are people who see you and applaud. Great job, guys!
Finally...THE PEOPLE!- I said it before and I'll say it again. Tekko has some of the nicest, most diverse people around. I never have problems asking for pics or just hanging out and joking around. I'm usually a quiet person, but I can cut loose with the best of them here, and it's great. If you need something, people will try their darnedest to help you out. As long as there are people like that attending, I don't care if Tekkoshocon takes place in a bread box next year, you will see me there. One more thing though, be prepared for massive rickrolling! It was EVERYWHERE this year. You could NOT avoid it! No matter how annoying it seemed to me at the time, I can't help but laugh about it now.
I should have my pics up tomorrow. The jerks at the developing place took our cameras when they knew the machine was broken and we just got them back yesterday. We won't be using them again, that's for sure. >=P
