Today I was again self-guilted into updating this thing. I also figured out that I really do enjoy writing. Guess that's a step forward for me.
I rate today as being "good," but in the unconventional sense. Usually, my good days involve a blur of friends and activity and smiling. Today I only smiled to myself, and the only blur was due to darkness. And the only activity was unplanned, really.
I went to my internship late--got there at 11--because I stopped for a bagel and coffee with my mom. We've been fighting lately, and something is always off when I'm fighting with my mom. We managed to be pleasant to each other today.
Got in, sat down in my cubicle (it's actually Mike Biglin's cubicle, whom I've never met but is incidentally the Metrowest's soccer writer) and finally started work on an actual article. I realized as I was starting the first paragraph that my only job was to write. That's what my internship was about--writing. For twelve hours per week for the rest of the summer, I would be a writer. And if I wanted to be a writer for the rest of my life, I could do that too. The thought fit, and confirmed that my ambition was more than just something that I tell myself to give myself a purpose in life.
And coming home from my internship, I talked to my dad for the first time in weeks. As in, had a conversation, and laughed, and had an intelligent and drawn out exchange with him.
Then, around 5:30, Will called, and I missed the phone. So I called him back, and he said "Hey, this isn't a good time, can I call you back in 10 minutes?" And ten minutes later he showed up with his car and his license. I thought to myself, "It's true that we've grown, and that someday we will grow up." I got into his car barefoot and we drove around for awhile, meeting some of my friends by chance in Natick center, and afterwards stopped by the mall so that he could buy some shoelaces. Black shoelaces.
When I got home, I ran. As I approached Elm Bank, I heard music. Sure enough, there was a circus tent set up in the middle of one of the fields. I ran through the gardens, and stopped next to the statue of Athena. She kept moving slightly in the moonlight, but it was subtle movement. I was staring at her, but she moved like I could only see her out of the corners of my eyes.
So, that was my day. I didn't do any homework, and I didn't make any money. Yet, somehow I feel like I gained something from it.
