Usually, the time in between when I get into South Station and when I have to get on the subway to Kendall every Saturday morning is spent at the book kiosk. It's not a shitty kiosk that only sells romance novels, self-help books, and liberal propaganda... They have some really good stuff. I started reading "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" this morning, which I've been meaning to read for a long time. Anyway, the same guy--young, in his mid-twenties--runs it every morning, so I always see him. He smiled at me today. He has this little stereo on the counter next to the cash-register, and for the past couple of weeks he's had Billie Holiday on. You can hear it best from the "literature" (whatever that means) section. But today, I realized that he might not actually have genuine musical curiosity (musical intellectualism, I guess). He might just be playing that so that "intellectuals" will be more inclined to buy books from the kiosk. He might tell all of his friends, "Oh yeah, I don't like any of that shit, but it really pays off." It was kind of really upsetting. Maybe I'll ask him about that next week.
