Is part of this ritual the act of suffering? If so, then ice and frigid waters are necessary. :) Are there unusually warm temperatures in Ukraine this year?

It's +5 C now. They promise -4С on Jan 19, so there may be ice on the river but I think it won't pervent mw from ice river challenge.

And I will certainly enjoy it, not suffer :).

As for ritual, being a Catholic I don't support it as a ritual. For me, it will be a sheer act of badassery.

Okay, so you answered one of the questions in the post. I guess some nonbeliever badasses also engage in the ritual, merely for fun, not religious reasons. :)

Alas, I don't know the answer. I have never participated in ritual and festivities. I cannot fiddle with wet clothes on the cold winter, so I go to an ice-hole stark naked, alone, in the dark...
