MEASURE 43

This November, you will have the opportunity to vote on a number of issues. Few are as important as Measure 43. Measure 43, if passed, would change Oregon law to require doctors to send a government-mandated certified notification letter to a parent at least 48 hours before a young woman 15 years or older is able to obtain a legal abortion. Measure 43 makes no exception for victims of rape or incest. Measure 43 also permits doctors to be sued or lose their license if the notification letter is not received for any reason (postal service delay, etc). The only alternative for a teen seeking an abortion is to plead her case to an administrative law judge at the Oregon Department of Human Serivices - a bureaucratic state agency that is already stretched too thin. These DHS employees are not actual judges, and would receive no special training in sensitive family matters.

Measure 43 puts vulnerable teens at greater risk. In the real world, some teens can't talk to their parents b/c of violence or abuse at home. Forcing a doctor to send a government mandated certified letter to an abusive parent puts a vulnerable teen at even greater risk.

The complicated process required to legally by-pass Measure 43 throws an already conflicted teen into a bureaucratic maze--just when she needs help from caring, supportive adults the most. This delay will also delay the procedure. 2nd trimester abortions are much more dangerous than 1st trimester abortions.

MEASURE 43 IS NOT SO SIMPLE....AND NOT AT ALL SAFE.

Don't let this measure open the door for legislature restricting reproductive rights.

VOTE NO ON MEASURE 43.
