plastic labels

There are these nice coffee machines in the schools where I work and I'm addicted to getting cappacinos. Although I wish I could keep myself from indulging in this horrific act of environmental degradation, they are really good and I enjoy them so much. The type of coffee you chose (there are about 8 choices) gets poured in a little plastic cup and out comes a warm liquid, with froth on the top, and a little plastic stick for stirring gets dropped in it. And when you are finished you throw it away, like all the others you've ordered in the past, like all the other hundreds of cups purchased by students putting coins in the machine everyday.
And when you stir the coffee, up rises the sugar on the bottom, and then you use the little plastic stirr-er to collect all the froth and slurp it.
Then i go into class and teach and feel really alert and high for 40 minutes.
Today's topics: Steretypes of Americans.....here's what the Italian 17 year old students said....
Americans are:
big spenders
fake (thanks to pamela anderson)
fat people who eat rubbish
hard workers
have low level of cultural awareness
open minded
loud
use politically correct speech
violent
liberated
like eminem
naive
patriotic
imperialistic
moralistic

They derive most of this from what they see on the media. Programs like the Simpsons, Orange County, The bold and the beautiful gets aired regularly. Last night there was the film 8 mile aired, so that's why eminem is on the list.
We didnt get to finish the lesson properly because time ran out. And when I attempted to go through each one and tell the reality, I actually had to agree with a lot of them. But I tell them repeatedly that in a nation of more than 270 million people it's difficult discuss perspectives without making generalizations.
