I am so grateful for this journal, as I can always amuse myself reading about the intriguing lives my friends lead. I'm so far away from you all!
I have had little time for personal matters this past week. I have worked incredibly long hours. I have no access to email on these computers for some reason. Will you please let others know I think about them and hope to contact them soon once I find the proper means to reach them.
Here is the setup in Parma, Italy:
We are in this huge school building that's made of marble. It's partly a university, a school, and hotel. I share a room with Jessica, who is from England. The cafeteria prepares 3 meals for the appetite of a dinosaur for the residents everyday. The other residents are university students. There is one from spain, 2 from albania, and 4 from italy. have created friendships with them. very nice people.
The summer camp. Kids arrive at 9 and leave at 6. I had a class of 12 students, ages 7 and 8. We split the kids up by age and english level at the beginning of the week. When the kids leave, we all have to prepare for the next day of lessons. We have stayed up until midnight preparing for the next day each night! VERY EXHAUSTING!
The kids are such fun. They run their little italian mouths all the time and I understand most of what they say, but I pretend like I don't know anything. This forces them to try to speak the little english they do know to get across what they mean. They caught on to using gestures and movement, which is so hilarious to see. They're little pistols though and I had to yell a lot to get their attention. It's really hard to get through to them sometimes and I just want to shout in italian, but I have to hold back.
On friday, they performed in a show on the stage in the school for their parents. We rehearsed all week for it and my kids were so excited and brought their costumes from home to play their part. They spoke very simple english in the play, like I am angry, The prince is sad, and I am a mouse. I do not know where the quotation marks are on this keyboard
I worked really hard this week and am hoping that the next will be a little easier. 18 hour days is so gruelling. I'm enjoying it though.
I will find out on Wednesday where I will go next.
I have two directors here at the school. they do administration stuff and help us out with supplies and things. one of them came from england and has been living here for twenty some years. she is a free spirit and i love chatting with her. the other is named sylvia and she has silver hair.
