Guy has arrived :-D

Guy is here with us now at the house. OMG he is one pissed off hedgehog when we pick him up on his back. I have to video it. He tries to scare us with huffing and “popping” and it just makes us laugh. Roll him over onto his front he unrolls easily and he is cautious but curious. He licked my hand last night and sniffed my palm thoroughly. He allowed me to massage one of his little feet, which are soft and slightly leathery feeling.

He is in beautiful condition and there is such a difference between his demeanour and Percy’s. We will be looking out for ringworm as well as lungworm while we have him.

He is pleased with his large digs. We put him in and he found the food and water first off and then he explored the whole perimeter of the cage. He checked out every corner of the cage, then he went under his towels and rummaged around in his torn up newspaper.

This morning I noticed that he ate very very well. :-) He is also being supplemented with Esbilac, which is a milk replacer for puppies. Hedgehogs cannot digest cow’s milk well and it makes them ill. For nursing we generally give them a 1 part Esbilac formula to two parts water, but as he is just weaned I am giving him 1 part to three parts water to make it weaker to finally wean him off of it.

It will be thrilling to release him in the spring. As with all of our hedgehogs, when he is old enough and weighs enough, he will go back to Brian’s in the soft release pen where we withdraw contact over a 6 month period and then they are ready to be released back into a suitable location.

This now gives Harper Asprey more cage space and takes away another mouth to feed that doesn't have to be looked at in the centre.
