Attack of the giant hedgehogs!

Sep 23, 2010 18:41

As you know, Harper Asprey rehabs all sorts of wild animals. If people bring them in or call us about them, then we rehab them or see if they can be returned to the wild immediately (sometimes people bring in baby animals that aren't injured and shouldn't have been removed but the parents aren't near. Most times the parents will come back for them).

We get between 100-20 hedgehogs a year - either orphaned or injured.

We cannot let them go in the wild until they reach at least 700 grams and can forage for food. Hogs under 700 grams aren't suitable for hibernation. They need to have a large layer of fat to survive on in the winter and our job is to fatten them up.

This is a HUGE hedgehog that we will be releasing. He weighs 1.6 kg! He is a monster. He will be released into the wild soon - before he eats his carers!
