Declining an invitation

Mar 27, 2012 20:55

Hey, I'm sure this is repetitive, but there's no tags being used in this comm I guess. :\

Can anyone give me an idea of what it means to decline an invitation? Is it the end of the world? Is there any chance of receiving another assignment? I am hearing conflicting reports on this.

What is the best way to explain to your PO that you want to decline? ( Read more... )

hey, I'm so sorry I couldn't respond until now.

I ended up accepting my placement, and with about 5 weeks left before departure, I ultimately resigned. There were a lot of unseen circumstances, but I think the truth came down to the fact that I knew that if I went, I would probably ET within 7 months or so. It wasn't what I wanted in any way -- wrong region, wrong language, wrong program. I don't think PC should have expected me to be happy.

You should evaluate what about PC was most important to you, and determine whether or not those things will be met by Ukraine, and how much it would matter. It is possible you will really love it, or the other way around. It's a very personal decision, and I'm sorry it's tormenting you. I know how it feels.

I was originally planning on refusing my placement and hoping for another, and my plan was to say that I really wanted to continue using my fluent language for personal, academic, and professional reasons in my future career. It was true. It hurt my heart to think of not using it for 2 years. But I don't know if that's a good enough excuse.

For me, I really think it just wasn't time for me in my life to go to PC anymore. I had planned on it for so long, but by the time the opportunity came, so many things had changed for me. Maybe it was for the best that I got assigned to the wrong program.

I'm sorry if I was too late with my advice. I hope you find a decision you can feel good and strong about, and I wish you the best of luck in the future. If you want to talk to anyone about it, feel free to comment back and we can exchange info.
