Today I slept in. And I didn't have to worry about not having that time for my homework! *sigh* totally fab.
I woke up to the phone ringing, and Elsa wasn't getting up to stand by the phone and watch it sleepily, so I did. I rolled out of big at approximately ring two, and got to the phone just as Andrew was about to hang up. Luckily, he was leaving s short message first, so I had time to dive for the phone! We then proceded to be confused about the logistics of the day. I thought we had Geva tonight because that's what the Calendar said. Turns out mom had told me the wrong day and no one had corrected it. Elsa luckily noted the confusion from her bed (this is at ten to noon, and we had been asleep the entire time), and corrected me that it was Sankofa we were seeing tonight, not the next Geva play.
After much confusion, my mom returned home shortly after I called her and left a message, and told me that she would be going to Lauren's baby shower until 2:30, making my day line up perfectly! Lauren's baby shower from about 1:45-2:45, Andrew's house until 6, Sankofa until 10ish. Andrew and I took a walk over at Finn Park, just down the road from them, we saw a hawk and a Turkey Vulture.
At the Wolf's I got to see baby Bree. She's adorable! And little! I could stare at babies all day. No wonder parents get so attached. It's not just a chemical evolutionary thing, there's also the fact that babies are soooooo cute! Women who don't feel the *squeeee* of delight whenever they see a baby are not something I can understand. And I don't know how Andrew can live having never held a baby. I mean come on, you haven't really appreciated life until you've held a baby. You stare at them and you're like: wow! I started out like that! And someday I can MAKE one! All of my own! And they'll come out all adorable with pink skin and big eyes and rolls of baby fat (and in my case, bald). And they'll smell all babyish, and you'll get to snuggle them and change their poopy little diapers and sing lullabies to them and watch them let their food drip down their little baby faces and stare at them while they sleep and stay up all night when they cry and generally worship them no matter how much they projectile vomit on you and scream while you want to be sleeping, because when they're not unhappy, you can watch a baby for hours. It's like when you have a new baby pet, and you can't do anything but sit around (ideally with a camera) and wait for them to do somehting cute. And you have to stay, because just by existing the baby is cute! Absolutely enthralling.
Enough waxing poetic about babies for now. It's time to talk about Sankofa!!!
Sankofa was very cool. I will abridge the story because it's late and I'm tired, but you can always ask me for details.
First off: Next year, you should so come! It's totally awesome.
This year, I was sitting in the second row. Sitting that close to all the color and music and dancing sort of explodes you brain, and you're just sort of left with the thought: wow, this is cooooool.
Now that I'm taking some African dance, I even recognized a couple of moves as being really similar to some of the ones I've learned! The whole beginning was very good, but I think I'd have to say I liked the stuff after intermission the best. Those pieces just stick out in my mind more. There was the tongo-ish thing with some capoeira people, where my first thought as the shirtless guys come onstage is (as whispered to Ellyn): somewhere an Elsa just died. I looked over to the pooch, and sure enough, a look of distaste was plastered across her features. It was cool anyway though. Then there was a neat more modern piece that I really liked, and one of the dancers in it I recognized! Her name is Amanda, she was wearing the red sweater, for those of you reading this who were there, and the looks sort of Russian, pointy nose, light brown hair in a pony-tail. I met her at Summer program at Draper my last year there.
Then.
There was the Finale.
My head was exploded several more times. It was like a huge Brazillian PARTY!!!!!! There were these wild big feathery headresses, everything was in Pink and Green and White, and sparkles. crazy sparkles. It was like a fabulous assault on the senses. Totally awesome. Mostly people were in less sparkly, more colorful costumes with bright headresses. But there were five particular dancers with extra-big headresses, itty bitty outfits, big shoulder thingies with bright pink and green feathers for trim, and silver shoes who were Extra Glittery. Three girls: Green and Pink, seqinued Bra-thing, glittery torso, bikini bottom-type-things with silver accents hanging on either hip and over the butt, sparkly detail on front, Green and Pink ankle bands, very shiny and sparkly, and silver heels that totally made the outfit, with green and pink sequins or sparkly tape on the toe straps, and two guys: little green bikini bottoms with silver accents hanging in front, back, and at sides, pink (i think it was pink) Chest strap thingies (to hold on shoulder and back feathers/shoulder-extensions?), ankles gurad thingies like the girls, and silkver sneakers with light-up soles that flashed pink and green. Oh, and did I mention tghe sparkles? And this one guy (the one with long hari) in his little green bikini bottoms was having waaaaay too much fun shaking his booty to be straight. Not to mention dignified....but hey, ehatever, he was having fun.
Anyway. Sankofa was great, my day was good.
Elsa and I watched some of the Robert Msigel Cartoons on Saturday Night Live, and now I'm going to bed. I'm tired. 'Night all!
