Allison Cameron was pedantic about some things, like being tidy, and being healthy. She knew the way she was going, it would hurt her, scar her emotionally again, but she couldn't stop, she couldn't dig herself out, and she didn't want to bring other people in to her mess. Especially Lindsay.
She needed a distraction.
She wasn't tired. She went to her closet and looked for her trainers. She put them on laced them up, grabbed her keys and phone, and left her apartment. She knew this was stupid, leaving at 11 at night to go jogging, but she knew it would be okay, as long as the path she took was lit up.
She went left and jogged up the hill. Her body was telling her to stop, yet her mind was telling her to keep going.
She got a stitch, and the athletic girl in her told her to run it out.
She turned around, and went back home. When she reached the door she realised it was unlocked. She pushed the door open, only to find Chase sitting on her couch, sleeping peacefully.
She put a blanket over him. As she did that he stirred slightly, and saw her.
"Allison, where the hell were you?"
She was shocked.
"I couldn't sleep."
"So you take off in the middle of the night?"
"It was lit up where I went."
"Where did you go?"
"The park."
"THE PARK? IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? ARE YOU CRAZY ALLISON?"
"I don't know. I didn't think so, but dating you threw my total mental health right off." She took a breath, she was livid.
"Why do you care anyway?"
"I'm your boyfriend! I should at least know when you take off in the middle of the night!"
"You are my boyfriend! Not my fucking guardian!" Her language caught him off guard.
"I just care about you."
"Really? Do you?" Her breathing slowed, and her gaze softened. "If you cared, you wouldn't yell at me like a child, you wouldn't question my sanity, and you don't stalk me."
"I don't stalk you."
"Maybe you should go."
"What?"
"GO! GET OUT!"
She awoke to the shrill ringing of her phone. She checked the caller ID. It was Lindsay.
"Hey Linds," She was still tired, and wanted to go back to sleep, "How are you?"
"Good, well better than you sound anyway." Allison could hear screaming in the background. "Hold on a second, Al."
She could hear faintly her sister shouting at her twin daughters, Jayden and Elliot.
"What did Jay do this time?"
"Oh you won't believe it," Lindsay sounded annoyed, "Jayden Claire James pulled the firealarm at school, and Ellie was being Ellie. Anyway, enough about my monsters, whats up with you?"
"Oh," Even though Lindsay was two years younger, she was a hell of a lot tougher than Allison, and Allison was scared of telling her this, "Uh, I quit my job, couldn't find a new job, got re-hired back at the same hospital as a senior ER attending, but still get hounded by my old boss, for dating my collegue, which started out as casual sex, which turned into Love Tuesdays, which turned into me saying yes, which turned into me not actually being in love with him, and just had a big fight with him, which he possibly interpreted as breaking up.."
"Oh. My. God. Are you sure you are not working at Seattle Grace?"
"Sure." She ignored the Grey's Anatomy jibe.
"So let me get this straight, You quit working as a immunologist, couldn't find a new job, then you got a new job as an ER doc at the same hospital, and you are not really in love with Robert, you just like the sex?"
"Pretty much."
"Well. Tell Chase how you feel, tell your old boss that if he doesn't lay off he is going to have to deal with a 4th dan black belt who gets agitated when flying, and just be good at what you... ELLIOT ALEXANDRA JAMES IF YOU DON'T LET YOUR SISTER OUT OF THAT HEADLOCK.. Sorry Allison, I have to go."
"Okay, love you."
"Love you too." She clicked off the line.
She glanced over at the clock, "8:45am.." She registered this. "Shit! 8:45! I'm going to be late!"
She stood up, letting the blanket fall to the floor. As she stood up, dizziness overcame her and, she needed to grab onto something to keep her upright.
She rushed around, grabbing clothes and getting dressed. As she ran for the door, she grabbed her keys. When she got to the car, she realised she had not had breakfast, but she shrugged it off, and drove to the hospital.
She walked into the ER at half-past nine. There were a backlog of patients, a guy who had a needle in his arm, a kid which superglued his mouth shut, and a women who could not stop hiccuping. She beelined for superglue kid.
"Hello, I'm Dr Cameron, I will try and unstick your sons mouth, Mrs...?"
"Elinor McWinters. This is Jaysen." The woman pointed to her son.
"Jaysen, what I'm going to do is give you anasthetic, which will numb your mouth, and I will also blindfold you so you don't get scared okay?"
He nodded.
"Mrs McWinters, I will ask you to leave, because what I have to do will look painful, and you may scare Jaysen."
After she had finished, it was about 11:30. She was hungry, she needed food, so she went to the cafeteria. She was walking down past the surgical wing, it was a shortcut.
"Allison?" Chase had found her.
"What?" She meant what she had said the night before.
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
"Aren't you?"
"You what?"
"Sorry?"
"No." Small sentances were keeping her from decking him. Living with her sister had taught her a thing or two.
"Where do we go from here?"
"What?"
"Well, do we move on?"
"Robert," Her voice softened, "I meant what I said last night, about getting out. Except I didn't mean just of my apartment."
"You mean its over?"
"Yes."
With that she turned and continued to the cafeteria leaving a confused, and upset Chase, and an eavesdropping, widemouthed House in her wake.
