ugh. look at these so-called eating out dieting tips for eating out at restaurants: (from the msn sympatico website)

"Bring pre-packaged fat-free dressing with you, so you're not at the mercy of the restaurant's selection."
"Bring a small container of low-fat sour cream."
"Start with a side salad (minus bacon, cheese and croutons). Ask for fat-free dressing on the side; and be sure to dip your fork into the dressing, then into the salad."
"Don't even open the menu! Simply know what you want to eat before you get there."

like, what is the point of even eating out? it's like, let's just take out ALL enjoyment of food altogether. i bet these people view every single morsel of food they put in their mouth as the enemy. i bet they hate food. i bet the think food is only for fat people. and the funny, ironic thing is that i bet they're fat! i bet you anything the more they try to eat their low-fat sour cream and dip their fork into the salad dressing first, the fatter they get! because if you treat food like that, you're always going to be hungry and unsatisfied and unhappy, and become way more prone to caving in and eating a whole pint of ice cream in one sitting. plus, since the food they eat is so lousy they probably eat a LOT of it. it's like those people who buy, like, gross low-fat instant chocalate cake and eat the entire cake because they're all "oh it's low fat." when really, if you have a small portion of something decadent like chocolate mousse, you're actually consuming fewer calories and you just feel a lot happier. and if you're eating something high in fat, it will fill you up more than something low in fat, so you can eat less of it.

i know there's like a million dieting books out there and i've never paid any much attention, but i think the only worthwhile one is "french women don't get fat." apparently it advocates eating out at restaurants and is all about enjoying good quality food in small portions. i know that when i started dining a lot, and when i did cook i changed my philosophy to "quality, not quantity," i lost 10 lbs and it has stayed off for years. it's not even a diet so much as a paradigm shift, and frankly, it's a good one. who doesn't want to be able to order dessert anytime you want with no guilt? just share it with your dining companion - it tastes good and instantly you're cutting out half of the calories. i think that the problem with most people is they simply eat too much and they hate food. what a horrible, horrible life it would be, carting around low-fat sour cream with you everywhere you go!
