JOSS WHEDON ON EQUALITY NOW:
"There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That's me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That's a great deal harder, and that's Equality Now. It's not about politics; it's about basic human decency."
Can't Stop The Serenity was founded right here in Portland Oregon as a global, fan-organized effort to raise money for Joss Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now. Last year at a sold out 500-seat event on Whedon's birthday, we raised over $7,200, marking Portland's take as more than 10% of the worldwide total, and more than any other participating city. In 2006, we did the impossible. This year, with two screenings at the historic Hollywood Theatre, we top it.

RAFFLE
We will be conducting raffles at both of our screenings. Need some extra enticement to attend? See below for a partial list of this year's raffle prizes. Raffle tickets will require cashy money, so make sure you've hit an ATM!
• Voucher for Serenity Collector's Edition DVD
• Serenity: Those Left Behind trade paperback
• Serenity: Those Left Behind mini-poster
• Autographed copy of Finding Serenity
• Voucher for Serenity Found
• Buffy: Season 8 #1 with variant cover
• Alliance Currency Money Pack (fan club edition)
• Done the Impossible DVD
• And more!
In addition, we will have two authentic Serenity props -- Bank Heist Money Display and Reaver Throwing Razor Weapon -- although it's not yet been determined whether these will go into the general raffle, a special raffle, or an auction.
SHINDIG
Immediately following our Saturday screening, we will be having something of an after-party at Moon & Sixpence, just a couple of blocks away from the Hollywood Theatre. This is something of an unofficial-official event. By which we mean that this isn't a private party, and the location is not reserved for us, but we've set the shindig for a typical "lull" in their Saturday schedule and they're set and ready for us to be there.
And while we don't have the space reserved, Moon & Sixpence has graciously agreed to donate 5% of the evening's food sales to Equality Now. So when the movie's done, and you've collected whatever raffle items you've won (because you are going to enter the raffle, right?) head on over for some delicious British pub fare and continue helping the cause.
Festivities will begin at 5:00 PM on 23 June. Moon & Sixpence is located at 2014 NE 42nd (one block up Sandy from the Hollywood Theatre and two blocks north on 42nd). Minors are permitted, but restricted to the spacious outdoor patio (where, weather permitting, most of us will be anyway), until 9:00 PM.
Remember: Last year's screening sold out, and we had to turn people away at the door. Buying your tickets in advance will ensure you don't miss out this time around.
