So there were people begging for there to be Red Velvet cupcakes recently. With cream cheese frosting. And I was one of the beggars - this was just before a) the month with no work for us on-call folks and b) the month when our boss totally changed how she runs our payroll. So while being one of the beggars I promised to buy a full dozen - since the baker is not fond of the type, and I have only bought a half-dozen in the past. Only seemed fair, to get her to make a flavor that doesn't particularly make her happy, right? But the month turned over before the red velvet occurred and suddenly I have $7.97 to my name - which means no cupcakes for me. So I make some kind of deeply self-pitying response to the red velvet announcement - have to say something, since I did promise to buy a dozen and now even a half-dozen is out of my reach.
Next thing I know,
drjeff is emailing me to say that he and
sistermaryeris were emailing each other, both going "OMG did you see
shalora's post? We need to do something about that!", and I am the recipient of my very own half-dozen Red Velvet Scholarship Cupcakes. No charge, and pickup rescheduled a few times (friends visiting with small children makes life interesting), and holiday icing (I love blue food!), and shiny sparkly red-and-blue things to make it all festive (Fourth of July and all - this is a late post) and I am seriously overwhelmed by the caring behind this offer.
Let me tell you guys - these aren't just phenomenal cupcakes (which I'll get to in a minute). These are also a couple of deeply kind and caring people. And those are the kind I'll support to no end in this world of bottom-line and CYA and people becoming so distant from each other.
And in the meantime, I swear they put crack in their cupcakes. Now I'll be honest - I don't have much experience with red velvet cake. I've only had it a few times before, and only within the past few years. I mostly like anything that is a vehicle for cream-cheese frosting - I am seriously hooked on that stuff. But these red velvet cupcakes? They blew me out of the water. They had flavor. They were moist. Until I was a dork and left them unwrapped overnight. And even then, they somehow got less dry after I wrapped them up and left them again. And even slightly dry, they were delicious. Rich and flavorful and oh-so-satisfying.
And the cream cheese icing? Seriously, I want the recipe. So I can make a batch and sit down with the bowl and a spoon. To DIE for, seriously.
So you guys - wow. Thanks to
sistermaryeris for being such an amazing baker, and to the both of you for being what my grandmother would call "good old-fashioned good people".
