For a great number of years, among the glitterati of Manhattan, the name Miranda Priestly evoked envy and fear in equal measures. Seen in the company of some of the most eligible bachelors that claimed power and wealth in the uppermost echelons of society, and almost always seen with some of the most beautiful and competent assistants trailing to a side, the cameras that circulated various society functions had never taken a bad picture of the Runway Editrix; a brief glimpse through the archives would have allayed any doubt that existed on that point. By all appearances, she lived a charmed (and hectic) life, whether married or divorced, both men and women had a difficult sorting out whether they were more envious of her professional successes, fearful of her seemingly effortless beauty; men wanted her, and women wanted to be her, complete with the bevy of handsome swain that fluttered about her like moths to a captive gaze.
After her second divorce was splashed all over the gossip rags like so much detritus on the street, the allure of Miranda Priestly did not fade, and had in fact, notched itself upwards by virtue of 'availability.' Even after the rest of those that had professed interest in Miranda had finally stopped spinning their heads in confusion at the relationship between Andrea Sachs and her, her cachet had not diminished a wit. Rather, there was the new envy of her ability to have snagged this beautiful young woman with her wide smile and brilliant eyes. Women no longer thought to worry about losing their husbands to the flame that was named Priestly, but were too busy wondering about the potential threat of Andy Sachs instead.
This background hum would have amused Miranda and Andy greatly if they had given the matter any thought. Her attendance at the various events around the city were a professional necessity, and the mindless moths that sought her attention had the lifespans of the creatures they emulated -- colourfully short. Anyone that paid careful attention to Miranda's eyes would have seen that her gaze very rarely slid away from Andy when she was in sight, and her uncanny ability to locate Andy in a crowd had others whispering about a very short ball and chain.
The truth was much easier and more obvious than it was hidden. Both of them would have separately mentioned that they had no eyes for anyone else when they were in the presence of each other.

It was some time into Andrea's tenure at Runway that she finally saw the endless efforts required to actually appear effortlessly beautiful. It required a whole Closet's worth of accessories and accoutrements to give the wearer the final appearance of a well put-together woman. Even after she left Runway, Nigel's lessons on style and selection did not fade into the background but rather, Andy became somewhat of a practical example of mixing and matching pieces to garner the necessary 'look.'
Later though, Andrea noticed that Miranda spent significantly less time and effort and would still be able to cause a ripple of jaw-dropping once she entered any space. There was no magical elixir that could be bottled and marketed, although legions of men and women would have paid small fortunes for such manna; rather, it was an interesting combination of confidence and sang-froid.
For those that knew of Miranda by reputation only, their imaginations provided enough stars and shine that Miranda could have appeared in a potato sack and they would have declared it to be haute couture regardless of reality. For those that knew Miranda beyond her reputation, they recognized Miranda's signature style quickly enough to acknowledge her selections and then moved on from there. Of course, there were the very privileged few that would ever see Miranda away from any fabric at all, and from there, a starstruck declaration that Miranda herself felt better than the finest silk in the world.

There was a vague sense of inevitability that she felt even as Miranda Priestly ducked into her Mercedes; who knew when it could be, or where, or under what circumstances, but Andy was certain that their paths would meet again. It was like an invisible tether that would draw her back towards Miranda and there was no amount of struggle that would change this truth. It didn't matter that they wouldn't see each other for another five years -- each of them could have named the prizes and accolades garnered by the ever-successful Editor of Runway and the junior reporter of The Mirror and then The New Yorker magazine respectively. Like a conversation that had paused midway to forever, the gaps left by time and experience were made richer by the moments of silence that filled themselves with comfortable awareness.
They might have been older, but not necessarily wiser; they did not resume from the same point of interaction, but it was an ever present reminder of the past. It was the same fear that drove them forward -- to move as quickly and as far away from that memory as possible. Yet like most other moments -- it became but one more rosary link clicking forward with each movement.
