SWEENEY TODD, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is considered one of the great musicals of all times (some people consider it the greatest). Written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, it is a musical that isn't easy to stage. But re-imagining the masterwork in a revolutionary way, British director John Doyle has found the key to making the musical come to life. By having each of the actors in his production also play a musical instrument, Doyle has given a new thrilling dimension to the legendary tale of this 19th century London barber out to seek bloody revenge.
The actor-musicians are empowered to own the tale of SWEENEY TODD, and their instruments become narrative tools. Doyle's production was the toast of the 2005-06 Broadway season, winning unanimous raves from the critics, many major awards (including a Tony for best director of a musical and a Drama Desk for best musical revival) and nightly standing ovations.
SWEENEY TODD comes to Toronto in a new touring production directed by John Doyle and starring Judy Kaye (the Broadway star of Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia! and many other productions) as Mrs. Lovett and David Hess as the demon barber himself.
SWEENEY TODD plays a limited Toronto engagement from November 6 to December 9, 2007 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
