Surface noise is an artefact. ;-)
There is a subtle physical interaction with vinyl that is precluded by digital formats - the needle drop. The record spins, you see the label artwork moving, the spiral scratch swirling, and you lower the tonearm onto the grooves. The beauty and complexity of that instantaneous feedback of placing the needle and hearing the sound can't be overstated. :)
The next jukbox heart podcast is all about vinyl - specifically discarded, trashed vinyl. I'm sure I'll need a new needle when I'm done with it. ;-)
