A Rhinebeck sort of day

Oct 17, 2011 09:31

It was a beautiful day to drive up into NY State and attend the New York Sheep and Wool Festival. I arrived shortly after 10 AM and started to walk the show. Yes, I did buy four things, an alpaca fleece from Carolyn Clark of Heavenly Sunset Farm, some organic merino roving that is to die for from Spirit Trail Fiberworks - http://www.spirit-trail.net/ - and two skeins of sock yarn to make socks for my Dearest. Spirit Trail also had a cashmere blend that was pretty incredible for $7.50/oz. I resisted. Maybe next year. Ok, here are pics of the purchases.

Alpaca fleece, 2 lbs.

Organic Merino - looks like a cloud and is just as soft, 4 oz.

Sock yarn

I forgot to take the camera so did not get any onsite photos. I know, fail. I did see the most adorable angora bunny at one of the stands along with llamas, alpacas, and every type of sheep imaginable.

I must admit to drooling a bit over the various spinning wheels but they are way too expensive - a small tabletop model was $800 plus and it was no bigger than a kids shoe box. No, really, $800.

There was one wheel maker - The Merlin Tree that sold portable wheels in the $299-369 range so this might warrant further investigation when I can get some money saved up.

I wanted to pick up a light weight spindle but nothing in the show caught my fancy. One young lady is using the new technology of 3D printing to produce spindles which I found interesting.

One thing I always find myself laughing about is that you can get yarn overload when attending one of these events if you are not careful. LOL! This is number one reason I like to walk the complete show before buying anything. Then, if something sticks in your mind you can go back and pick it up, i.e. the sock yarn.

By 2:30 PM I had pretty much finished the show and it was looking like it might rain so I headed toward the car and pointed it in the homeward direction. The Sunday traffic was the usual with two major slow downs but eventually I got home. Yes, I was tired by the end of the day.

I did a few rows of knitting but was falling asleep so I just gave up and went to bed after dinner.

It is a cool 45 degrees outside but the sun is up providing a crisp light on the hills this morning.

Coffee is gone, it's time to start the day.
