So this top shelf whiskey I bought the other day is really fantastic, but it's also 100 proof, so a little bit goes a long way (i.e. knocks me on my ass).
Anyway, I wanted to update yesterday but it was such a shitty day that I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Highlights:
One of my kids, a big lummox of a fellow, was playing hackey sack with some other kids while we were waiting for our sponsor. Even though he was about 15 feet away from our van, he kept backing up until he ran into the van (not at a very high speed mind you) and dented the panel with his body. Yes, I shit you not, this kid is so big and has such poor control over his movements that he dented my fucking van with nothing more than himself.
Needless to say, my day did not start out well. Shortly after that, I found out that my Work Ditcher's parents called in and said he was sick and then had a funeral the day after, which meant he was missing three days of work and it was (at least according to his parents) completely legit. So I didn't get to fire him, and that put me deeper into my already awful mood. I really needed a win after that van incident, and I didn't get it. So now I get to explain to my boss that we have a dented body panel on our rented van due to a game of hackey sack. Needless to say, I put the fear of God in those kids that morning, letting them know I wasn't going to put up with any shit that day because I was in such a nasty mood. Needless to say, I scared the hell out of them. They did work pretty well the rest of the day though, though later I found out that my best worker may be leaving (second time I've heard this kid might be leaving). All in all it was just a crap day, especially having to explain over and over to bosses and co-workers what happened to my van.
Today was much better than yesterday. We got to work up at Heil all day digging out gravel from drainage pits on the side of a gravel road (much more fun that it sounds). By far the best part (besides all the kids behaving and working well) was that I got to drive the Gator, basically a Golf Cart on Steroids with 4 wheel drive and a cargo area on hydraulics, to load up and move the gravel. I had a wee bit too much fun driving it, but it was just so freaking awesome! I felt like such a redneck, twas great.
Nik took my van in for an estimate today and it's going to cost $830 to fix. Not nearly as much as we'd feared it would cost (they have to replace the whole fender) but still a massive chunk of change. Tomorrow will be interesting. My wayward worker is supposedly coming back tomorrow (we'll see if he shows), and it's eval day tomorrow so I have to tell all these kids how they are doing and what they can do to improve. Most of them are doing fine but there are a few evals I'm dreading. I am sort of looking forward to giving Work Ditcher his eval. Even though it's not going to be pleasant, hopefully it will bring good results.
Anyway, that's all I got for now. Let's pray for no expensive property damage tomorrow...
