What a PERFECT finale!
A lil' bit of time has gone by since you last posted a chunk of this, and I honestly couldn't remember most of what had happened, so I just hit the ol' rewind button and went back to the beginning - which was the perfect thing to do. Reading this all the way through, as I would with a book, no real interruptions...the flow of it comes through beautifully. Very nice pacing throughout. I don't know how much editing you did (you mention cutting out chunks that slowed things down), but what's left here works as well as any novel I've ever read, and *certainly* scads better than most of the SPN pro novels.
The case is interesting throughout (and I love how you had Sam go back and resolve it at the end), your OCs are nicely three-dimensional and likeable (well, except for the ones who were supposed to be SOB's!), and everyone seems in-character. My issue with a lot of Dean whumpage is that it seems contrived, but what you've set up here seems genuine, well-researched and believable.
Above all - I am so tickled that you were able to work up the proper mojo to return to the story and bring it to a close with the same energy and love that you gave to the earlier chapters. There's no letdown, no sense of "Well...at least she finished it." You can be rightfully proud of yourself for this little endeavor. BRAVO, dude. BRAVO.

Jesus, I don't know how true that is, but it was certainly one of my greatest fears in returning to this fic. I'll be honest, I haven't watched much SPN this year, and the episodes I have, I confess I've mostly fallen asleep. I fell asleep in the episode where Bobby died. I FELL ASLEEP IN THE EPISODE WHERE BOBBY DIED.
I mean, part of that is because in the last few years I got myself an awesome job I love that wears me out, and the kind of life I had hitherto dreamed about having. I'm also surrounded by a bunch of real life Dean Winchesters - honest-to-goodness tough guys with deliciously flawed characters but good hearts, so my need for the fictional one has abated somewhat. I get my fix at work every day, you know? Lucky, lucky me.
I worried horribly that all this would show glaringly in the final chapter and epilogue, and I still worry that it does, glancing back over it. My heart has, sadly, moved on from SPN. But it was just so important to me that I finished it. So it is what it is, and I did as well as I could. Thanks a bunch for suggesting it might not be as obvious as I think. And, of course, for reading at all.
