Sachiko thought about how long she had been with Rei only yesterday: when Rei, for the first time, called her by a pet name. She remembered that moment all the well, because she had stared at Rei with wide eyes and didn't utter a word, unsure of what to say or if she would even reciprocate. Rei just laughed at her startled expression and kissed her, then continued to work on her assignment.
After that, Sachiko could not concentrate on her homework, nor did she really care about it. Questions plagued her mind: did she make a mistake by not returning the show of affection? Did Rei feel rejected? Was Rei angry? But Rei didn't seem angry at all, Sachiko recalled; Rei seemed very amused, in fact, which, oddly enough, was making things more difficult for Sachiko. She would have understood perfectly had Rei been hurt or angry, but amused?
Though, Rei always did enjoy making her flustered; this could very well be another of her silly antics. Still, Rei's jokes aside, Sachiko wondered how she felt about terms of endearment. She thought they were silly and tacky, and even vowed to herself that she would never go to that level. But yesterday, when the pet name came from Rei, it sounded very genuine, very sweet - it made Sachiko tingle all over, and for some reason, the thought of responding with a pet name thrilled her just as much.
Sachiko carefully snuck a glance at Rei, who was slightly engrossed in her homework. Subconsciously, Sachiko began running a list of pet names in her head, and thought which would fit Rei best. When one came to her suddenly, Sachiko brightened and said, "Rei," but then her plan to keep to herself until was ready went awry: "Rei, darling..."
Rei looked at Sachiko with a big, hopeful grin, "Did you just say---"
"Nothing!" Sachiko squeaked, "I didn't say anything... no, I..."
Rei smiled, uttered a soft, "Of course", and went back to work.
