ALmost (but not quite) irrelevantly--did you all catch Hogfather Sunday night? The bits with the wizards was excellent--although Ridcully was more restrained than I imagined him.

We're both great Terry Pratchett fans, so we picked up the DVD of the show when it recently showed up here in town. Hogfather is one of the Discworld books that we like a lot and I [Perri] re-read it periodically. The British production seemed stuffed to the gills--it was like they were reluctant to leave anything out. We enjoyed it, the British don't seem to be able to ruin things like this, unlike their US counterparts. Susan seemed truest to her character in the book. Death not so much, which is to be expected. Richard commented that Mr. Teatime's voice sounded like an evil-voiced Elmer Fudd [of the Bugs Bunny cartoons]--could that have been the actor's real voice? Or did they manipulate it somehow? Actually, all of the wizards seemed more restrained than we had imagined them from the book. All in all, a good show.

Very good. I am not sure I could come up with one "U," let alone ten! And speaking of unabridged dictionaries, are you familiar with THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN: A TALE OF MURDER, INSANITY, AND THE MAKING OF THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY by Simon Winchester? It details the contributions to the OEd by Dr. W.C. Minor, an American and Civil War veteran who was responsible for several thousand entries while an inmate in the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. The book also goes into the history of the dictionary project as well as the life of Professor James Murray, who was intimately involved in the project for some forty years. Now I think I will seek out some pineapple upsidedown cake, a tasty dessert I haven't had in years.

I [Perri] thought that "U" was going to be difficult as well, but I actually came up with about 20 things I could have used and, in fact, had difficulty in choosing the ones to include. For one thing, "U" includes all of the un- and under- words, of which there are, of course, quite a few. I could almost have made up a list of ten by just including all of the various bear species--but I refrained ( ... )

True, it is pleasant in southern Arizona this time of year. On the other hand, we are only a month from our summer temperatures: we were still occasionally hitting the nineties in October, and I only put away my shorts two weeks ago. And high summer here is brutal, with June daytime temperatures well over a hundred. It's a dry heat, right? Not in July and August, our summer rainy season when the humidity rises and the temperatures remain high. So we have to be careful at whom we laugh. I should add that I love the summers here. I suppose that attitude represents some sort of primal desire on my part to be put to the test (physical in this case), or perhaps just simple masochism--take your pick.

Masochism would be our pick. We were at a WorldCon in Phoenix years ago when the temperatures were consistently above 100oF, coupled with high humidity. It's not an experience we would be anxious to repeat.

I thought you just liked polar bears. What's with all these other bears?

I'd like a letter, but not just any one...please give me W. Thanks.

Polar bears are my [Perri's] very favorite type of bear, without question. However, over the years I've become fond of brown bears [especially grizzly bears and Kodiak brown bears] and black bears as well [in their various colors, ranging from black, brown, tan to white]. In a pinch, I also am interested in other types of bears: sun bears, spectacled bears, sloth bears, etc. BTW, giant pandas are not really bears, just very distant cousins of them.

So, you want the letter "W"? Well, it doesn't really work that way--I'm the one who is supposed to choose the letter for you. How about "Z"? No, that would probably be too difficult. I could give you "X". Nooo, that would almost certainly be impossible! Well then, how about "W"?! The one thing I'm sure you won't pick that you like that starts with a "W" will be 'wintry weather'!
