This Doesn't Surprise Me

On the other hand, I am surprised that I still have the energy to get angry about it. It makes me sad and angry at the same time. Hardly a productive space to be in (with a migraine to boot).

Long and short, some people posed as Katrina Survivors and the results shockingly turned along racial binaries.

The biggest problem I have with this situation is the race aversive terminology used in the article to decribe these heinous acts. I mean, really, wtf is 'linguistic profiling'? I'm not even going to try and get into a discussion about whether or not Ebonics should be a recognized language or dialiect, but could this be referring to anything else?

So yeah, the title in and of itself pissed me off. Then I read the article and it just made it that much worse. The fact that these people are profiling based on what they THINK POC sound like is dispicable. The fact that they, upon being confronted with the fact that they can be WRONG about said stupid assumptions, STILL find a reason to turn POC down for housing is just reprehensible.

At the same time, I find it disheartening that someone can be referred to as using "different voices" as if he is an actor simply because they have the ability to grasp cultural linguistic differences and replicate them. That is just sick to imo.

And finally, what's worse is they're highlighting this like it's a specifically Katrina related problem. Yes, the Katrina Survivors (as someone with a plethora of family and friends that fall under that particular umbrella I feel compelled to point out I have serious issues with that phrase, but that's another post). This has been going on FOR EONS! Duh.

I'm riding the fence on Baugh and his studies and work. More research is required for me to take a stance on that. However, the tone of this article makes me ill.
