Nice :) If everyone could just recognize our collective cultural narcissism, we'd be one step closer to a better world.

Cross-Cultural Solutions is a pretty good shorter term program ... there IS a fee associated, and it is substantial, but they offer an enormous amount of support and feedback during their programs, so it's money well spent.

The Peace Corps is a 27 month commitment minimum. There are certain requirements, including a bachelor's degree or minimum of four years of relevant work experience. The application process usually takes 10-14 months between first application and staging (when you're put in your country for on-site training.) So that's something to consider.

When thinking about the sort of general "volunteering abroad" idea, there's a lot to consider. Do you want a program with a fee, or without? The former will generally get you more, but you have to be careful to find a reputable one (like CCS.) How long do you want to be gone? Some organizations will have set dates for a one-time project (building a house or well, etc) while others will have sort of "rolling availability." Where do you want to go, and why? If you're open to going "anywhere," that can be useful, but if you've studied a particular region (especially if you have language skills or nuanced cultural understanding), it gets easier to look at specific programs targeted by region. Most importantly, what skills do you have to offer? Some organizations require specific qualifications or skillsets; Peace Corps requires extensive volunteer experience in a particular field plus a Bachelor's degree and/or 4 years relevant paid work experience, while Worldteach just wants someone with tutoring experience and ESL certification.
