Yesterday Phil and I turned on the oven for the first time in order to heat up a frozen pizza. But after a couple minutes, some smoke started to come up through the range. We turned on the exhaust fan and figured this would be minor and just due to not being used in a long time. But no, the smoke continued and increased. We opened windows and I tried to fan the smoke away from the detector. Finally Phil thought to look in the drawer under the oven (the broiler?) and sure enough, something was on fire! It looked like paper and we scrambled to find something to put it into. I handed Phil a plastic bag. Not such a great idea. As Phil exited the building the bag also caught on fire and ashes started to fall on the floor. He finally got the stuff outside and stomped on it. But there was more paper on fire inside the oven drawer. Phil remembered the apartment came with a fire extinguisher but neither of us had ever used one. I remembered being taught that you had to pull the pin out and from there it's pretty easy. So Phil extinguished the fire and we had quite the mess to clean.
Thank goodness for Phil and the extinguisher. I don't know what I would have done if I'd been alone.
Now to get our extinguisher refilled...

Oh, by the way, the manual to the oven/range is what caught on fire.
