Day one!

Today is the first day of my new job!  From what I gathered over the phone (because there was no interview) it is a clerk position with Census 2010.  I'm guessing that I'll be inputting all of the info from those packages people got.  It would sound extremely boring if I hadn't been unemployed for the last year and three and a half months.  Boyo, I can tell you about bored, now!  I just wish I could stop with the thought carousel of "I should have exercised more" or "I should have kept the house cleaner."  Yeah, because in the 35 years that I've been an adult, I've always wanted to do those things.

But, this is a temporary position and the staff is hired in two month increments with the opportunity to sign up for another two months, so I've got to be prepared to start the whole thing over again.  At least this will make my unemployment benefits last longer.  Oh, and I've got a nit to pick about that, too.  How come no one told me (and it's not in the booklet, either) that if you get a part time job, it just moves your benefits down a bit, it doesn't replace them?  Like, I could have (if anyone had hired me) been working at least part time and stretching my benefits.  Makes me angry, especially when I've already used a hunk of my savings because the HR Gal at KVIE gave me incorrect information at the start; she said that I had to use up my severance pay before I could collect unemployment.  WRONG.  Thankfully, I found out that this wasn't true after only a month, but that's about $1600 smackers that I shouldn't have had to spend.  But I never called her on it, because that's the kind of shmuck I am.  But I figure, now, that applying later made my benefits start later, so it's evened out in the end...sorta.

So, I've got half an hour before I catch the bus downtown (mini squee:  I love Downtown!  It's so full of people and exciting...well, as exciting as Sacramento can be.)  I'll report back with the deets, as the cool kids say.
