Author Notes: I wrote this awhile ago, but I didn't have wireless access and so it was stuck on my computer. I don't know what's up with that lj-cut line. I think I had some kind of idea, but now I can't remember what it was.

He remembers the day his dad got his new truck.

It wasn’t much better than the old one, still a pile of junk, but his father had been so proud.

He remembers the big blue behemoth pulling up to his school, the engine rumbling and his dad grinning in the front seat. He remembers hopping inside and listening to his dad ramble on happily about everything in that car from the transmission to the rearview mirrors. He remembers them picking up burgers and fries then parking down by the river and sitting on the tailgate as they ate, his dad telling him old stories from his childhood. And he remembers that he didn’t get hit once that day.
