Potty Training Jack

May 26, 2010 14:27

Jack is 16 months old and he seems to have decided he's tired of diapers. For the last three days, he's been removing his diaper and going potty in the floor. Clearly, this isn't working for me. But I think he's ready to start working on using the potty.

Today I changed him back to all cloth diapers. He hates feeling wet, and he will feel it sooner in those. I have started talking to him about needing to go potty after he has a drink or eats. I am going to get him a potty chair soon, so I'm not going to start talking about actually using the potty until I have it. I'm dressing him in one piece outfits for now to keep him from removing the diapers. When I see him squatting or straining I ask him if he's going to go potty. Then when I change the diaper, lots of praise for having gone potty. I'm trying to get him to recognize that what he's feeling when letting it out is going potty and it's good for him to do it and be aware of when he is doing it. So far today he has let me know every time he is going and I am changing him right after so he'll know to associate letting me know with being clean and dry. We'll probably keep this up until I get the potty chair, and then I'll start helping him sit on there when I notice he's ready to go.

It would be great if he could be trained by the time the baby gets here.
