A much better choice for genre fans is the Chicago-set "Dresden Files," which has its season finale 9 p.m. Sunday on Sci Fi. Though the series has had a few iffy episodes, it has grown on me over the course of its first season. The subtle yet skilled Paul Blackthorne does a good job as wizard/detective Harry Dresden, and any story involving his ghostly assistant Bob (the terrific Terrence Mann) or Dresden's tortured family back story has been compelling. Sunday's finale sheds light on the family of Dresden's cop partner, Lt. Connie Murphy (Valerie Cruz); her father comes to visit in a poignant episode that revolves around second chances.
Speaking of second chances, if "Dresden Files" comes back for another season, I hope the writing continues to deepen and make this modest fantasy series even better. And I pray that the show's creative powers lose their fondness for the shaky-camera technique, which is really overused on "Dresden Files." That extremely annoying affectation is the program's biggest drawback, but it's one that's easily fixed.
