The summer staff from Cascades gets a devo every week from one of the executive directors. I thought I'd copy the one from this week here. It's convicting to me - it's easy to get busy here, just like in the rest of the world. I want to know what you guys think of this.
Blessings,
Michael
Psalm 46:10
"Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth."
We live in a world today in which the concept of being "still" is a bad idea. "Time is money," is just one of a multitude of thoughts and ideas that drive us these days to be overworked, stressed out, and pushing ourselves to the limit every second of every day that we are alive. What is it to "be still?" Our society tells us that it's a foreign theory and almost a bad word.
I was walking early this morning and as I headed out the door, I had a last minute thought: better grab the ipod so I don't get bored. It didn't occur to me until after I had walked quite a distance and listened to a few songs (and until my dog came running up behind me and I nearly screamed because I couldn't hear her and thought she was a cougar!) I was really missing out on what was going on around me. After I took my earbuds out, and thanked Dakota for joining me (she was pretty excited to walk), I just began to listen to Creation around me. It was a windy morning and the sun was just coming up. Soon, I stopped in front of the pasture and just watched the morning come to life. Bird's chirping, trees swaying, rain sprinkling... I found myself moved to pray and recognize God's awesome power.
In doing so, I was still and it was amazing. For even a brief few minutes, being still gave me a new and fresh perspective on just how awesome and powerful God really is. I was also blown away that in all that power and might, He knows me by name and loves me as I am. It was a great way to start my day, in reverence to Him, and receiving His grace, love and mercy.
Have you found God in your schedule today?
