Ooh, Jostein Gaarder is good too. I think I remember The Ringmaster's Daughter being my favorite, but they were all interesting. It's been a while since I read any of his books though.
Also, finding someone who is not absolutely in love with The Life of Pi pleases me greatly. All my friends constantly rave about it, but the only redeeming part for me was the cookie at the end. However, the movie will be amazing because Jean-Pierre Jeunet is making it, and Jeunet cannot possibly make a bad movie. (We shall not speak of Alien.)
If you can find the graphic novel compilation Flight, you will be pleased.

Also look at books written by Jostein Gaarder. My favorites are Sophie's world, The Christmas Mystery and The Solitaire Mystery.
