A man came into the store today and rented Jurassic Park. This was exciting to me and this other guy I work with because, liek whoa, Jurassic Park! It's a classic! Weird Al even wrote a song! And they sure don't act like Barney/and they wish I were their dinner, not their friend/Oh, no! Ah, Weird Al, how you could amuse my 12-year-old self.
But, whilst renting this movie, I got over-excited and happened to mention that . . . I was afraid of dinosaurs til the age of 16.
Yup.
Dinosaurs.
Not only did he laugh at me, but the customer at the next register also laughed at me. Full on, "BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Dinosaurs!?"
I guess 16 is kinda old to be afraid of them.
I dunno . . . I saw the movie when I was 12 and chickenshit, and I'd never seen effects like that before, and then in the post-Jurassic Park-dino-craze all these facts about dinosaurs kept being repeated. Like how T-rex was 2 stories tall (my room was on the second floor . . . he could, like, poke his face in my room and eat me while I slept. And the raptors, don't even get me started on the raptors. I was convinced that they were in my hallway . . . waiting. And because of this I outright refused to see the movie again, so the fear sorta percolated until my brother made me watch it again and it finally clicked that it was sciencefiction. Still, I sorta wish this had clicked much earlier, like, at 13, or something. At least I was afraid of them for a shorter period than those worms-monsters from Tremors. After watching that movie when I was 8 I wouldn't walk to my room via the floor, but through a series of well-calculated jumps from couch to chair to counter, quick dash across kitchen (tile=safer), table, stairs, safety. I think my dad showed it to me simply for the post-movie entertainment.
So, I'm turning this entry into a meme.
AHHHH! Childhood fear meme:
Copy and paste this into your journal. Write an entry about a childhood fear. Something that you're not afraid of anymore, but which really terrified you once.
