It was June 1st and that meant Ace's birthday. He'd been unprepared for Addison's birthday, but since he had had ample warning for Ace's he decided to get her something. The question was: what to get her?

There's not exactly shopping malls on Craphole Island.

He eventually decided to turn to the clothes box. It was, surprisingly, helpful. What did he find in the clothes box today? Pins and buttons. Lots of pins and buttons. Lots of pins and buttons in the same fashion that decorated Ace's coat. Excited by his luck, he took all of the best ones and wrapped them up in a colourful silk scarf.

Now it was just a matter of finding her. This took a bit longer than he thought it would but eventually found her by the TARDIS.

"Hey," he called out, waving slightly.

Ace's head snapped up, and she had to stop abruptly to avoid walking into a tree. She was talented, at that, especially with her rucksack over her shoulder. "Hey, Jamie." She tried not to look wary, tried not to even think about the whole birthday thing, even though he was one of the few who actually knew it was her birthday.

"I got you a present," he said, revealing the make-shift bag from behind his back.

Okay, so that was sodding unexpected. "I- Er-" She went from normal to flaming crimson in mere moments. "You didn't have to do that, Jamie."

Oh, God. He thought that because she'd told him when, that he had to get her something.

"Nope," he agreed. "But I wanted to and the clothes box was oddly cooperative." He held out the bag, gesturing for her to take it.

She slowly flushed dark red. "I- But-" She looked at the bag in his hands, and her brows knit. "You didn't have too." She pressed her lips together and then finally reached forward to take the bag out of his hands. She stared at it almost like she had no idea what to do with it.

It'd been... a long time.

"You open it," he suggested. "I know it's a scarf masquerading as a bag, but the general principle still applies."

She blushed, and swallowed hard before she bit her lip, and tugged at the knot. "... Well." She looked at it again, and then finally worked it open, her eyes widening as she looked down at the jumble of pins and things. "Jamie-" She looked up, amazed that he'd actually thought this much, and- well.

"Thank you." She looked back down at the scarf in her hand, blinking a bit in awe.

"Like I said, the clothes box was being oddly cooperative." He grinned at her and rubbed the back of his neck, looking uncharacteristically modest.

She started to go through the jumble, her eyes widening when she saw a Blue Peter button. "Oi, Jamie, this is brilliant." Her face had lit up, and she tightened her hand around the pins as she found herself suddenly hugging him, before pulling back to look at them again.

He was slightly startled by her hug but he hugged her back. "Good, you like it!" he said, sounding pleased.

Ace smiled, and shook her head, looking over the slightly worn pins and things that'd been in the scarf. "I've not- I mean, it's been a long time, and just- Thank you, Jamie." She actually leaned up and kissed his cheek, before she tugged out her jacket to go ahead and find places for her new pins.

He grinned. "I'd sing you Happy Birthday, but it'd probably be best for all ears involved that I don't."

Ace's eyes widened, and she stopped dead, staring at him. "... Yeah. No singing, okay? People don't... sing. I mean. Most people."

"People don't sing?"

"To me. People don't sing to me." She reddened at that, and busied herself pinning on pins and badges and things. "This is terribly ace, you know that?"
