i think what fascinates me about coppola is that, despite all the ranting and raving against her and the claims that she doesn't actually do as much on her films as she says she does (screenplays especially, as lost in translation reportedly didn't have much of one - understandably so since if you watch it, there's not that much dialogue in it to begin with), she still continues to work on projects that matter to her, and i don't think she actually cares about making money. her father's francis ford coppola, for christ's sake, she shouldn't have to. and that's why i like her. i think she's very similar to the filmmaking aesthetic i attach myself to, which emphasizes story and mood, and slow development in order to establish a meaning, rather than a plot, or a meaningless, frivolous action-adventure/etc movie. that's why i relate her to jarmusch as well. i really don't think that either one of them has an interest in making money doing it. it's just something they have to do.
and all those people on that thread are ridiculous. i especially hate the ones that just go 'i can't stand her...blah blah blah...i'm fat and ridiculous' instead of giving ANY reason whatsoever that they don't like sofia coppola. i think it's because, exactly as you said, they're unsure of it themselves...
thanks for posting all this stuff, john.
