My friend was having a movie/tv themed Halloween Party last Saturday. I wore cargo pants and my black BDU top with the American flag and Atlantis patch. :D
On Halloween, I played my church job in the morning. It amuses me that a secular holiday such as Halloween fell on a Sunday this year. In the afternoon, I helped to pick up windfalls in the orchard. These are the walnuts that didn't fall from the tree at harvest but have since fallen to the ground. There are 2 giant crates of them! In the evening, I watched the World Series. Go Giants! \o/
Earlier in the week, one of my piano students, a 13-year-old boy, told me he had a story to tell me when he came for his lesson. For a community service project at school, he went to a local homeless shelter and played piano for the people there. He told me about an older gentleman who was there and played the organ and they had a jam session together and it was awesome! My student told me all of this with such enthusiasm! This from the boy, whom when I interviewed him when he first came to me as a student 5 years ago, flat out told me he didn't want to take piano. He's come a long way and is quite the pianist now.
The latter half of the week was quite active. I did my usual run on Wednesday and Saturday. On Thursday, I had errands to do and it was such a nice day, I rode my bike. Round trip: 15 miles.
Also on Thursday, my dad and his cousin took a trip to socal for sprint car racing. They had just arrived and were on their way from the airport to the race track when a guy on a motorcycle decided to involve them in a freeway accident. The biker was lucky, escaping with scrapes and bruises (as far as we know). It's undetermined who was at fault at this point. The boys' rental car took some scrapes and dents on the passenger side and the passenger side mirror was wiped out. They were both ok but pretty shaken. That certainly took some of the fun out of their weekend. They spent Friday morning finishing up the police report and seeing about getting a replacement rental car.
On Friday, I started cleaning up my pantry. It has become the black hole for all things that have no other place and where things sometimes go when I need to clean up in a hurry - it gets stashed in the pantry. I had been sorting through stuff for no longer than 5 minutes when I found my hiking book that I had misplaced a few months ago. I flipped through it and found a hike, packed a lunch and water, got in the car, and went on the hike! It was too much of a nice day to waste it on cleaning the house, lol.
From my hiking book: "The Centerville Flume was originally begun in the 1850's to divert water for gold mining and later was put to use for power generation around 1900. On this hike you'll enjoy a cool, shady stroll on a flat dirt path next to the rushing water of the canal. The trail begins in live and black oaks and ends in firs. After 2 3/4 miles you reach a nice overlook of Butte Creek Canyon which makes a nice stop for lunch. If you continue for another 1/4 miles you reach a tunnel where the flume is sent into the hill you've walked around." Round trip: 6 miles.
<-- I walked across this!
There was more than one spot where these were strung across the flume. I don't know what purpose they serve.
A few splashes of fall color on the drive back....
The Honey Run Covered Bridge. A high school classmate of my dad's was responsible for permanently closing the bridge to vehicular traffic when he crashed his car into the bridge and damaged it. You can still walk across when the gate is open. I happened to arrive when it was closed. The banner strung across advertised a community bazaar to take place the next morning.
