Decade

Jan 03, 2010 22:24

Here it is: my life the past 10 years. Did a lot of traveling and meeting new people.

2000 - Senior year at university, rediscovered Star Wars films and fanfic, family reunion in Denver, working in the Rose Garden Cafe.
My senior year at Chico State, I was finishing up my degree in music and piano pedagogy certificate. I gave my senior piano recital. On the program were Brahms Op. 117 Intermezzos, Bach (concerto for 2 keyboards, which I performed with a friend), Schubert, and Bartok.

It was the year I bought the Star Wars Trilogy Soundtrack and re-discovered the films. I watched them over and over again and read all of the novels and fanfiction.

We made the trek to Colorado to the family reunion. 2 days in the car to get there and 2 days in the car to get home. But worth it to see family and sight see different places along the way. Visited the Molly Brown House in Denver, natural museum (Egypt), didn't do the Mint because the line was too long and it was too hot.

My cat, Tobin, was 1 year old. Our neighbor, a nice lady who loves cats, offered to feed him and my mom's cat Julie, for us while we were away. It was was summer time and the cats would be fine outdoors, 24/7. We were gone for about 8 days, which was a long time for Tobin because he didn't seem to recognize me when I returned. He ran away from me when I approached him. This was unsettling at first, but he gradually came around.

It was the year I worked at the deli on campus; it was called the Rose Garden Cafe and was nestled along the Little Chico Creek which flows through the middle of campus (and also through Bidwell Park). My job was mostly making sandwiches but I also tossed salads; the sandwich and salad stations were right next to each other. I gained the reputation of making the best Chinese Chicken salad. It amused me because I never acquired the taste for Chinese Chicken salad.

2001 - graduation, Songs of Children cantata, piano, 9/11, grandma died

Finishing up my senior year. I was part time, with something like 9 units. I stuck around because A Cappella choir was to perform Songs of Children by Dr. Robert Convery, a cantata for choir, piano and strings. It's a series of poems written by children who lived in the Holocaust and set to music by Convery. It is the most emotionally draining piece of music I have ever performed! We performed it on tour in Northern California: a synagogue in Stockton, a church and high school in Novato (a lovely little bay area town), a high school in Grass Valley, and a performance here at home with Dr. Convery in attendance!

I graduated in the spring. Graduation is an outdoor event and this year the weather was very pleasant. It is either scorching hot or sometimes it threatens with rain. I had my graduation party at my grandma's with friends and family.

My parents bought me a piano, a used Yamaha upright (before this, I'd been doing most of my practicing on campus or at grandma's). They let me pick it out. At the piano store, I tried out many pianos, but I kept gravitating back towards this particular Yamaha. We were meant to be. ♥

I was still working at the Rose Garden Cafe on campus. That summer, just before classes started up, we moved into the new Bell Memorial Union building, a huge building that takes up a whole city block and houses many offices, the student book store, the food court, and an auditorium with capacity for 1,000 for concerts and 450 for conferences/banquets. Our new dinning facility was called the Marketplace Cafe. The deli was far from the salad station this time. I ended up working in salad prep. Salads were right next to the Asian food section where I learned to stir fry.

9/11. I was asleep when it all happened. My mom came over, pounding on my door. I was still half asleep but I remember hearing her say something about terrorist, bomb, World Trade Center. I put on some clothes and went over next door to watch CNN with her. I was having breakfast as I watched in disbelief as the first tower came crashing down. You couldn't see much of it, just a big cloud of dust and smoke (the close up footage would air later that evening). I went to work but they closed down the university by noon (all state and federal buildings were closed by noon that day). The campus had to keep the food cafeteria open for the dorm kids and it remained open until 7pm. I was off at 3pm (my normal time). We had just moved into the new building and they hadn't patched the stereo through the speakers yet. We were cut off from everything. So every time someone came in to order food, we'd ask them “What's going on? What's it like out there?” We heard stories of people huddled around radios around campus and people in offices watching it on tv.

My grandmother, my mom's mom, had been ill this year and by the time it was diagnosed (a cancer, I don't remember which kind, cancer is cancer and is ugly) it was too late to do anything but keep her comfortable at the end. You never want to lose dear loved ones but it was a blessing when she passed away because of the illness and discomfort she had towards the end.

2002 -
I quit my job at the deli on campus even though they offered me a regular position there. Sometimes I wonder what direction my life would have taken if I'd accepted the job. But I wanted to focus on building my piano studio and teaching full time and to be honest, the food industry can be stressful sometimes and I was ready for a change.

Being the dork that I am, a friend and I went to see LOTR:Fellowship just to catch the trailer to Star Wars Ep II which would come out in theatres in May. Knew nothing about LOTR or Peter Jackson but I enjoyed the film very much and now own the trilogy extended edition, which is the only one to have, btw! :P

2003
This year my folks bought me my 2nd used car. They buy me a lot of nice stuff, I'm very blessed. Though, I think I'm on my own for the next car purchase. The car I had was a monster from the 80's. I will say this, it got me around town just fine, but forget about long distance trips. Like the time my sister and I went to San Francisco to see Patrick Steward perform in Stravinsky's “Soldier's Tale” (what a treat! Hadn't seen Stewart in anything except TNG. He's amazing!). Coming home, we experienced car trouble. It lost acceleration on the hills getting out of the bay. Yeah, going at 30mph while everyone else is zooming past you at 70+ at 11pm at night is not fun.

Anyhow, the new (used) car (1999 Plymouth Breeze) was purchased in part with money from my mom's inheritance when grandma died. The dealer's price was $7,995 (before taxes) but with dad's awesome wheeling and dealing skills we got it for $7,000 out the door! I'm sure the fact that we paid for it in full with cash and because it was the end of the month and the dealership needed the sale helped us get the win.

2004 - family reunion in Denver, kitty died, SGA premiered
Another family reunion in Colorado. This time (the one and only time) I placed Tobin in a kennel while we were away. It was a nice place called the Catnap Inn, just for cats. But Tobin is used to having his own space and being in and out of the house, and I'm sure it was hard for him being cooped up in doors for a week. I left him there because I was afraid the pack of fox we'd been seeing off and on through the summer would find him a tasty dinner. :S This trip we toured Salt Lake City and visited the Mormon temple and took in an organ concert. Power outage before we left and tires gave us trouble and we upgraded the Les Schwab tires in Winnemuca, NV.

We got back in time to see the premier of Stargate Atlantis. I was hooked several episodes in but it wouldn't be until the following year that I fell in love with the show.

In the fall, old cat Julie died (my mom's cat). I crawled under the house to get her out. Poor thing had things inside her that eat dead things. It wasn't pleasant. :(

2005 - London, lost dog, MTAC conference in Sac, SGA obession *g*, choral accompanying, taxes

Jan London with my sister. This is an amazing story. In the fall, the Chico State Wind Ensemble (my sister plays flute in the ensemble) planed a tour through England. They teamed up with a university travel coordinator who coordinated with a vacation tour company called Go Ahead Vacations (I highly recommend them!) to plan the tour. Members from the community were invited to come along. I had never been off the North American continent before - what an opportunity! So I registered and made a small payment (the total was under $2,000). Unfortunately, half way through the semester, the ensemble had to cancel the tour because too many students were unable to pay their way but there were still enough community members signed up to justify making the trip. So there I was, headed to England without my sister. :( In late December, just days before the new year, my grandma asked if it was too late for anyone to sign up for the trip. I thought, “wow, grandma wants to go?!” but it turned out she felt bad about Adrienne not being able to go and had some extra money from harvest that year that she wanted to pay Adrienne's way. Mind you, it's nearly 7 days before the tour is set to fly out of San Francisco to London! I made a phone call and sent off some emails, coordinated with the tour coordinator (who was absolutely lovely to work with on this last minute addition) and we got the green light from the tour company. The only snag in the plan was because it was so close to leaving, the tour company couldn't promise that we would be on the same flight together. This would suck, because my sister hates flying and to have to fly by herself... :( But fate was smiling on us because we ended up on the same flight and were able to arrange our seats together at check in at the airport! It was a nice trip, 10 days, sight seeing mostly in London with an excursion up to Stratford upon Avon, York, and Fountains Abby. It was a wonderful trip!

Purchased my first mp3 player - all of 250MB!

Lost a dog while house sitting. She escaped from the back yard. Fortunately, a kind soul found her and dropped her off at the animal shelter where I bailed her out the next day to the tune of $80. Her owner reimbursed me.

Interviewed for a choral accompanist position but didn’t get it. I didn’t realized how badly I wanted it until I didn’t get it.

MTAC convention in July, in Sacramento.

Became obsessed with SGA. Discovered GW and lurked in the forum there all year. It wouldn't be till March the next year, that I would register and begin posting.

Star Wars Ep 3 was epic!

Fell in love with Cold Play

Got a choral accompanying position in another town 30 minutes away.

Became Treasurer for local MTAC branch.

In September, I took H&R Block’s tax course because even though I use Turbo Tax software, I never really understood taxes until I completed that course. And because I’m self employed and my taxes are a bit more involved than entering in my w-2 info.
