A little bit of excitement today with the
Balloon Boy story. If you didn't hear, it was thought that a 6 year old boy was alone in a run away hot air balloon in the shape of a UFO (yes, you read that right) in Colorado. I watched the story unfold live on tv.
Because all of the viewers thought there was a child on board and you couldn't see him, the stakes were very high. What if the balloon got high up enough in altitude that the temperature would drop or he couldn't breath? What if when the balloon crashed, would the boy survive? At one point the balloon was clocked at 45mph, though it averaged at 25mph for most of the flight.
And how the heck to you stop a run away hot air balloon with a child on board? I mean, you can't shoot it down. You couldn't get a helicopter close enough to it. It was amazing to watch the balloon slowly start to slow down and drift to the ground. A trail of rescue vehicles were tracking the balloon along it's journey and when the balloon got low enough to the ground a man ran after the tether dragging along the ground to sopt it.
After a while, rescue workers swarmed the area around the downed balloon but we couldn't see where the boy was. It was after all, unconfirmed whether or not the boy was really aboard.
Then when they didn't find the boy in the balloon, I thought to myself, "I wonder if that kid was responsible for letting the tether go on the balloon and then got scared when he realized what he'd done because he'd be in trouble."
Yep, kids these days. ;)
