CHAPTER ONE
The First Argument
It was a beautiful morning. Spring has just begun. The blooms and the greenery around the quiet suburbs in Chiba making it look like a shot right out of a photo book. The sun shyly peeking just above the horizon gives the town a soft glow. But the sound of china breaking disturbed the silence of the village.
“Rai! Come back here! That’s my toast!” Tanaka Koki shouted running after his dog who ran away. “Argh! Fine. Take it.” He sat back on the table and gave the other toast to Sakura, his other dog. Koki cleaned up the broken plate and got himself a bowl of cereal instead. After filling his stomach, he proceeded feeding his “children” except Rai and Sakura, who already took his toasts.
Once feeding his pets are done, he made a quick clean up of his house before grabbing his jacket and keys to visit the shrine.
“Good morning, Nagase-san!” Koki greeted the priest who was sweeping the front of the shrine. He patted the head of the dog that greeted him as Nagase-san greeted him back, cigarette dangling from his lips. “Is he eating better now?” Koki asked referring to the dog.
“He is. Thank you for looking after him.” Nagase-san said with a bow.
“He was easy to take care of. You were such a good boy, ne?” Koki ruffled the dogs, hair. Straightening up, he bowed back to Nagase-san, smiling shyly. He then proceeded to the shrine for his daily routine of offering a prayer.
Tanaka Koki is a veterinarian in this small suburban community. His house is a sprawling bungalow right in the middle of the village. It has a spacious backyard where animals he was rehabilitating can exercise. He used to share it with his grandfather who was also a veterinarian. He was the youngest of four children and have three older sisters. His grandfather took him in when his parents divorced when he was in high school.
Grandpa Koki passed on after Koki got his veterinary license. On his grandfather’s deathbed, he made a promise to take care of the clinic and the animals that he left behind. He extended the clinic so that the animals can have plenty of room for themselves.
After his daily routine at the shrine, Koki walked home. He came home to find his assistants Senga Kento and Nikaido Takashi opening the clinic. The two young men greeted Koki before returning to what they were doing. Kento cleaning the clinic while Nika checked on the animals that were left to their care.
Running the clinic is expensive especially when the flow of customers isn’t as much as it used to. Despite of that, he can’t bear to fire his two assistants. They were working students who were putting themselves through veterinary school. Koki wanted to help them seeing how passionate they are in their work.
The day went by like any other day. Hayase-san brought in her pregnant rabbit. Koki guessed he’d be losing sleep that night. One of her sisters came to pick up her dogs.
It was a normal day.
Clinic hours is almost over when the old lady Kamenashi came with a young man. Kamenashi-san is one of Koki’s regular customers. She owns the big manor a few blocks away. Her ginger cat, Abura, is a bit of a handful. The cat doesn’t seem to like Koki and only allows Kento to handle her. But for today, the old lady isn’t bringing her diva pet for a check up. Instead, the young man she’s with carries a dachshund that looks really weak.
Koki is meant to focus on the animal but he found his eyes straying on the young man the old lady was with. He was wearing tattered jeans and gray shirt. Nothing really special but there’s something about him.
“Good evening, Kamenashi-san.” Koki greeted the old lady who smiled at him sweetly.
“You don’t have to be so formal to me, Kou-chan. I saw you grow up. Kazuya, this is Tanaka Koki. The best veterinarian in town.” Koki blushed at the lady’s praise but frowned when he saw the guy raised an eyebrow. “Kou-chan, this is my grandson, Kazuya. He just came back to Japan and he owns the bakery beside Yuya’s flower shop.”
Grandma Kamenashi always love telling stories. She’s friendly towards the people around town and has been known to welcome people in her home with tea and her famous sweets.
Wary of Kazuya, Koki bowed slightly. “It’s nice meeting you. How can I help you tonight?”
“This is Jelly and she’s not feeling well the whole day,” Kazuya explained.
Koki nodded and signaled to Nika. Nika approached them with the form that needs to be filled out.
“Kindly fill out the form while I check on her.” Koki reached out for the dog. Kazuya glared at him.
“No! I want to see what you are going to do with her. I need to make sure you’re going to handle her correctly.” Koki wanted to snap at the young man to tell him he’d been doing his job for years but held his tongue. “I’ll fill out the form later. Check on her now while I watch.” Kazuya ordered.
Telling himself that he needs to be tolerant and patient, Koki nodded and lead Kazuya, who is still holding Jelly, to the observation room.
“What was the last thing she ate?” Koki asked while pressing Jelly’s sides.
“Are you implying that I was not feeding her right?”
“Not at all. I just wanted to know what was the last things she ate.” Koki tried to explain politely.
“So, what is wrong with her? Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Kazuya badger Koki with questions.
“I do understand that you are concerned about your pet. I’ve been doing this job for a while now. I would appreciate it if you have a little faith in me and let me do my job.” Koki was slowly losing his patience.
Kazuya folded his arms. “Jelly is my baby. I don’t want anything bad happen to her. Grandma said you’re the best in town so you better be the best.”
Not being able to concentrate in checking Jelly, Koki decided to have her stay in the clinic. “I advise that you leave her overnight so I can observe her.”
“What? No! No! No! How can I be sure, nothing will go wrong during the night?” Kazuya picked up Jelly carefully. “I’m taking her home.” He walked out of the observation room Koki following suit.
“It’s my job to make sure nothing will go wrong. I will keep you posted of her progress if that’s what you want. Or you can visit her first thing in the morning.”
“Kazuya-kun,” Grandma Kamenashi said gently, putting her hand on Kazuya’s arm. “Kou-chan is good with his job. He knows what he’s doing.” She turned to Koki. “For Kazuya’s peace of mind, do you mind if he stay here tonight with Jelly?”
Koki’s jaw almost dropped to the floor. Sure he’s got a guest room where Kazuya can stay but would he want this uptight and rude man stay? His mind was shouting no. For some reason, his mouth gave a different answer.
“No. I don’t mind.”
