We had a meeting this morning at work, which was a civilized airing out of some greviences. Some of the foreign teachers resent reporting to less experienced local teachers, and the goals of the program have only recently been spelled out to us. As the head of the program was talking with us, I’ve realized that she has to keep three people happy: the school principal, a government inspector, and the company a lot of the book buying and teacher hiring was outsourced to (the principal’s idea, not hers). So I sort of feel sorry for her, except she also delegated authority to other teachers in such a way that the organizational chart looks like those old switchboards telephone operators used before we had computers. We had a guilty chuckle about the fate of one of the junior supervisors; he was bad mouthing our boss’ boss while that guy was standing right behind him, so he’s under a lot of pressure to get results or get lost. But I don’t feel too guilty; I’ve thought he was as schumk for a long time, because of how he talks about his girlfriend and brow beats one of the classes.
