At work, we're working on this new software design plan which involves a standardized framework shared between apps, and when mapped out we end up with FIVE tiers from the user interface to the database, and a colleague just argued to me that just because we have so many intermediate layers, that's no reason we shouldn't force the user interface layer at the top to conform to the names and datatypes of the table columns at the bottom.

My question to that was, then what's the point of even starting on this multitier architecture in the first place?  No ice was cut thereby.
