Grindhouse: Loved Planet Terror (and, oh my God, was that the perfect Schlocktoberfest movie, or what), but found Deathproof to drag.

I agree with you on Death Proof. I absolutely loathe the first hour of it. Tarantino's intent was apparently to make you love the girls at the beginning so that when they meet their fate, it's shocking. Well, it wasn't shocking at all. I found myself hoping that Russell would back up to make sure that he got them, and maybe do a few brake torques to ensure that the deed was done. The back half was fun. Tarantino is one of those guys that needs an editor to help curb his self-indulgent tendencies (I'm looking at you, Kill Bill. You were one decent movie split and padded into a six-hour snoozefest). Everyone talks about how he writes such great dialogue, and he really used to. Now, he's started believing his press, and thinks that anything he writes is gold. The first hour of Death Proof proves him wrong.

That said, I put Grindhouse on the list, rather than just Planet Terror, because seeing the double feature with all of the trailers, and the little snack bar ad spoofs made it an amazing movie experience, unlike any I've had in years, even with better movies.

And yes, Planet Terror was indeed a great Schlocktoberfest flick. Rodriguez makes the right kind of movie for that vibe. He's making Machete, while he films Sin City 2. Hopefully, it'll be out in time ;)

On thw worst list: Should Fantastic Four be on that list? If it's pretty much a given that a movie is going to blow chunks going in, should it even get rated?

You know, you're right. My expectations for this movie were incredibly low to begin with. It probably won't make the final list. However, it was so bad that it didn't even manage to benefit from lowered expectations.

I was thinking more along lines of "Movies I Thought Would Be Good, But WTF Happened?" I can't even think about the butler in Spider-man 3 without getting angry (the Completionist in me wants the DVD for my collection; the Movie Buff in me is outraged at the thought of such crap tainting my lovely collection).

I feel exactly the same way, and have managed to resist so far.

I haven't seen Bourne yet (will be seeing it this Friday), but I'll be so sad if it sucks.

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I hold romantic comedies up to the bar set by Love, Actually, and that's a pretty high bar to try and hit.

Me too, and it's apparently a near impossible bar to reach, let alone clear.

I've a hankerin' to see Dexter

I think you'd really like Dexter. I'm most of the way through Season 2. I thought it would be hard to follow the first season, but it's really built on it in a fantastic way!

Lost... well-l-l-l-l... I want to like Lost. ... The back half was pretty decent, though, with a wowser of a last episode.

That's why I specified the back half. Although, watching it again on DVD, the first half holds up better without the 3-month break. Nothing like building up momentum and then disappearing for ages. I was really loving the idea of a start in February, and run through to May with all new episodes, no repeats, no delays. The writers' strike has put a crimp in that plan now, as we're only going to get the first half of the 16 episode season.

I'd like to nominate "The Bionic Woman" as a candidate for the worst show list. It's the show where nothing much happens

I really hoped that they were going to go in a different direction with this. Instead, they stuck with making it a slower, less fun Alias. I thought it started out okay, but got pretty muddled (no small wonder with all of the turmoil in the writers' room). That said, it landed at #6 on the worst list. The others on the list were tough for it to beat though... This year, I actually watched every new (scripted) show, for at least two episodes, in order to review them on Poptopia. As such, I had a large pool from which to choose both best and worst!

Okay, enough of my two cents gumming up your works.

Your two cents are welcome here anytime! Thanks for taking the time to respond with such detail!
