49. Ko / Revolution (Molting)

The I Ching symbol Ko means both Revolution and Molting. Lake battles Fire, and only at the right time, symbolized by seasonal change, is the old way molted like fur or the skin of a snake and the new way is brought in.

I am itchy under dead skin and fur. I feel a change coming, I am welcoming the time to discard an old way of being.

The molting process provides an analogy for authentic personal change. The old dies and is shed outward while the new emerges from within. The continuity is provided by the old way's protection of the new and inward. It is the old way's project to bring the new self into being then pass on. Our selves in childhood are ancestors to our selves in maturity.

Visiting Grandma with the family on Monday, I see her, my mother, and my sister discuss questions of childrearing (my sister has recently taken an interest in the matter.)

I tell Grandma that I like seeing them all in a row. "That's life," she says.
