Eh--not so noble. Or at least I think it would be a mistake to think about it that way. I think that would get in the way of mere compassion, solidarity, cooperation.
That said, yeah--stepping back and reflecting on it, I am attracted to it because of its nobility too.
I didn't know UU was active in social services. I suppose I don't encounter them much up here. Good stuff. Is the UU participation something new for you?
I get the impression that they have a sort of identity crisis over this, since they are in practice pretty elitist despite being totally open in theory. A lot of the social work that that community seems to do appears to be the less direct kind, like political advocacy for, say, anti-war and pay-attention-to-Darfur-dammit issues. This monday night dinner may be the exception, not the rule. But in fact, I don't really know a lot about this because:
