Wives and the James Tiptree Jnr Award

An interesting discussion over at http://coffeeandink.livejournal.com/1055928.html talking about the trials and tribulations of being a judge for the James Tiptree Jnr Award.

Here's what they had to say about my little piece:

Karen Joy Fowler: Jurors sometimes couldn't get along. There are a number of times someone will think a book is feminist in a really interesting way and someone else will think the opposite. "Apparently a feminist book looks very like an antifeminist book."

Alexis Lothian mentioned Paul Haines' "Wives"-- a brutal story, misogynistic, transphobic, etc., clearly saying interesting things about masculinity and whiteness. She thought very highly of it but could not exactly recommend anyone read it.

That was probably our first time putting a story on the shortlist we could not recommend that anyone read.
Gotta be happy with that!
