The Mysterious Case Of The Missing Sticker

Jun 04, 2009 21:44

Isla and I went to Dizzy Castles, an indoor play centre, and when we left, she received a sticker of a cat on her hand. Afterwards we went to a local cafe for lunch. She devoured an egg, half an avocado, with a side dish of fetta (she reminded the waitress of that, as I had forgotten to place that in the order) and a piece of toast. She polished it off with a jam shortbread biscuit. There was, as one can imagine, much licking of fingers and crumbling of crumbs.

When the feasting has ceased, she looked at me, her eyes wide. "Oh no!"

"What?"

She held her hand out.

"What?"

She wiggled her hand. "The sticker! It's gone!"

I looked around on the table, the seat, the cushions, the floor. Isla did her best impression of looking around too.

"You must have eaten it, Isla."

She laughed. "No!" Then the brow furrowed. "But I want it."

"Perhaps it fell off your hand when we got out of the car and walked to the cafe."

She stood on the seat and peered out the window at the footpath. "I can't see it."

I peered out too. "It would be very small and very hard to see. I don't know if we'll find it."

"Well," she said, unperturbed. "I'm a good detective."

(My heart melts. She's not yet three).
