Today's pauly_daily post is a little bit different, because I'm generally in a pissy mood, but with this as one specific...

Abby Sciuto voted #2 in TV.com's 'Top Ten Most Annoying Characters on TV' - WTF?!

The entry:

2) Abby Sciuto, NCIS

There is a lot of annoyingness on NCIS, a big, clunkily-written, flag-waving rock 'em sock 'em. That British guy with the bowtie? Why is he there? The other dude, the supposed-to-be-hot one? Feh. But worst of all is Abby Sciuto, the alterna techie who exists solely to give the show a little quirk or "edge." Only NCIS isn't that kind of show, it's not plugged-in enough to give us smart jokes about trendy things. Abby is the rah-rah Conservative's idea of what a snarky Liberal should sound like, and it just doesn't work. Plus, it cuts into all the gunplay! We want more shooting, less creaky jokes about goths and other "Look at that crazy broad" stuff.

My response to this is below, in defence of Abby and of Pauley's portrayal of her, as well as for Tony and Ducky:

There's so much wrong with Abby's inclusion on this list that I don't know where to start. For one thing, she's a huge stride forward in terms of truly original characters - she dresses like a Goth, yet is constantly happy and hyped up on caffeine. Her dating tastes run from sixty-five year old biology professors to Marty, who was little, to McGee and Eric who are tech geeks. Her musical taste is amazing, and nothing about her is shoved on the screen to prove how oh-so-cool the show is. Thank god she wasn't made a suicidal, miserable stereotype and/or yet another wallpaper character who just spouts scientific data at the investigators and then fades into the background.

In addition to this, Pauley Perrette, who plays Abby, takes a VERY keen interest in politics, and if Abby was scripted to come out with comments that sound like "the rah-rah Conservative's idea of what a snarky Liberal should sound like", Pauley would go to the writers and object, because she IS Liberal.

And why is Ducky there? Does he have to have a reason to be in the US, just because he's British? God forbid there should be an interesting, informed medical examiner with close ties to the team on a show - would a cardboard cut-out like the ones on all the other shows be better?

Final point - Tony, the "supposed-to-be-hot one"? I could probably find you a hundred people, within the space of an hour of posting on a popular crime-show-themed forum, who would tell you that he IS hot. I personally prefer women, but I'm not going to "feh" Michael Weatherly just because of that preference.

I suggest next time you make a 'most annoying' list, you actually poll it, so that statistics can give you a better indication of who's annoying and who isn't. This just comes across as a prejudiced rant.

Can I get a "hell, yeah"? XD
